Sought job: Translator

Being a native English speaker, I translate exclusively into English. My source language is French. The services that I can offer include translation, proofreading, linguistic revision, editing and post-editing. Among my areas of expertise are sport, leisure, gastronomy, transport, travel, tourism, business, marketing, communications, environment, technical and literature.
I am now available to work in a freelance capacity, having just successfully completed a six month internship with Ubiqus Ireland Ltd. This experience provided me with good exposure to the workings of the translation industry as a whole, thanks to the variety of roles that I performed. My first placement was in the Delivery Team, where I was responsible for checking the quality and formatting of each translation before it was sent back to the client. I was exposed to several different kinds of document, such as press releases and business correspondence to name a few. This exercise helped me to develop a strong understanding of the quality standards demanded by the translation industry. In addition, I developed the skills to provide translations in a number of different formats such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. My second placement was in project management, which shows my adaptability. During this time I was involved in recruiting freelance translators and translation memory creation and updating. My most important role was coordinating translation projects, where I was involved at every step, from providing the initial quote to sending the final translation back to the client. Effective project management demanded consistent liaison with clients, translators and sales teams, which meant that my capacity for team work greatly improved. Due to the constraints set by tight deadlines, I learned to work quickly and effectively.

I have also had some firsthand professional experience as a translator. During July and August 2014, I was employed on a freelance basis by Pronto Publishing Services to carry out some commercial translation for a major oil magazine. The types of documents to be translated included articles and interviews discussing the oil industry in Western Africa. Another example of my experience is when I was an English teacher at the Université d’Auvergne during the academic year 2012/2013, and I helped with the translation of the university’s website into English. It was through projects such as these that I developed a strong sense of autonomy, as well as a willingness to take initiative.

I successfully completed a European Master’s degree in Translation Studies at Dublin City University in September 2014 with the submission of my dissertation on semantic comparisons between English and French in the context of business and scientific genres. During the taught aspects of the course, I covered a wide range of translation modules, with subject areas ranging from marketing translation to technical and economic translation. These courses provided me with the necessary skills required for penetrating the exact meanings of a text as it is expressed in its source language, and for ensuring its accurate transfer into the target language. This therefore shows that I am qualified to perform translation in a vast array of areas. It was during this same Master’s that I learned to work with computer aided translation tools such as Trados and MultiTerm.

I am completely bilingual in English and French, having studied French language, literature and civilisation as part of my undergraduate degree. I enhanced this knowledge even further by spending three years in France, where I reaped the benefits of fully immersing myself in French culture. The other aspect of my undergraduate degree included an expansive survey of English, Irish and American literature, which heightened my sensitivity to themes and issues in English speaking society as they were expressed in various literary forms and genres. Continuous analysis enhanced my ability to deal with the complexity of less accessible texts, and the discussion of them in essays and presentations allowed me to refine my sense of expression to no end. My aforementioned time in France also gave me an opportunity to share my own culture when I taught English at the Université de Bretagne Sud and the Université d’Auvergne. While teaching, I perfected some transferable skills, such as good organisation, effective social skills and excellent written and spoken communication.
